Relationships
The people you are around play a major factor in shaping your personality. These people helped to make Rufus the way he is.
Family: The only known member of Rufus's family in the game is President ShinRa. I think Rufus's mother was mentioned at the Honeybee Inn, but she isn't in the game, so I'm going to assume she is deceased or very rarely around. I also assume there were no siblings. Rufus's family life was obviously not a very good one. Rufus only had his father to interact with, and we know that he resented his father deeply. He criticized his father's rule of the company after his death, and didn't mourn him.
ShinRa: When Rufus becomes President, he becomes the boss. Therefore, the upper-level ShinRa employees are now under him. I think they resented him slightly, thinking he was just the bratty rich son that has power only because of his father. Rufus proves them wrong after becoming President, showing them that he is very capable of ruling the company and that things are different than when his father was around. The ShinRa consist of Palmer, Hojo, Scarlett, Reeve, and Heidegger.
Turks: Before becoming President, Rufus was head of thr Turks. The Turks' job was pretty much just to do ShinRa's dirty work. They remain very loyal to Rufus, despite the fact that he doesn't really treat them with the respect that they deserve. I think that Rufus really does respect them deep down, but wouldn't ever show it publicly, he does have a reputaion afterall. The Turks include: Tseng, Reno, Rude, and Elena.
Avalanche: Otherwise known as Cloud and the gang. Rufus sees the group as a problem that must be dealt with. They stand between him and the promised land, and he won't have that. He sends the Turks to take care of them several times, with no successes. The only real contact he has with them is at the ShinRa tower.
Sephiroth: Rufus and Sephiroth are after pretty much the same things; the promised land and world domination. Thus making them immediate enemies. That's just how it works. Sephiroth wants the promised land, Rufus must destroy him before he gets in the way.
