Rufus also means "red" in Latin. Red is a color commonly associated with power and strength. The ShinRa Inc. logo is red, as are Rufus's banners in Junon. Red can also be associated with blood, which indicates sacrifice, war or danger. Rufus's position of power puts him over affairs dealing with the people of Midgar's well-being. He is control at the end when he says "Fire." causing much bloodshed, including his own. Red symbolizes speed. Rufus is a very confident person and likes to be the best, no matter the cost. He likes to get things done quickly, but still does things right.
ShinRa means "new evil" in Japanese. This is a very appropriate name! Thing of Rufus's father as the "old evil". He is succeeded by Rufus, thus bringing in the "new evil". Makes a lot of sense, eh?
