It is debated as to whether Dark Nation is a dog, a panther, or some kind of tentacle beast. I personally think it could possibly be a Cuahl, which is a beast that resides around Gaea's Cliff. Dark Nation seems a bit more intellegent than the Cuahls, and of course a bit more tame, but I wouldn't put it past Rufus to have such an animal domesticated and imported. He may also be different due to mako exposure.

It doesn't really matter too much exactly what Dark Nation is. What does matter is that Dark Nation is Rufus' loyal pet and helps him out in battle situations. When you fight Rufus on the roof of the ShinRa tower, Dark Nation is right there to cast barrier spells on his master and himself.

If you defeat Rufus first, you don't have to defeat Dark Nation. That shows loyalty too, don't you think?
