FFVII: Before Crisis
Set six years before Final Fantasy VII the new game (currently only released for the cell phone in Japan by Square-Enix Mobile), Before Crisis follows the story of the Turks as they battle AVALANCE and is played from their perspective.
From what I have gathered through rough translations by those who have played the game, the story is set after Sephiroth helps ShinRa to win the war against Wutai. Around this time, AVALANCE surfaces (a HUGE group, hundreds in number! ...and I always thought it was a couple crazy kids underneath a bar! *shrug*) and declares a war on ShinRa. It looks like Rufus is VP at the time, and is "away on a long business trip", which makes it awfully hard for him to have any real influence over ShinRa. How and may How he's actually connected to the Turks at this point, I don't know.
That's all that I know for sure, so be warned that the rest is pure speculation on my part and is only a guess at the rest of Rufus' role in the game.
Knowing Rufus and what he thinks of the way his father runs things, it's unlikely that he would be able to sit idly during his time away from Midgar. We've seen shots of Rufus in the trailor, his face shaded as he makes a phone call. I think (and I've seen others agree on message boards) that Rufus contacts AVALANCE as an "anonymous benefactor" and pretty much funds their fight against ShinRa. His motive? That they get rid of his father so that he can step up as President. A little cold hearted? Yes, well... >D We'll see how close to the real story I am someday.
